A short history lesson...

It's no secret that many Americans have a poor grasp of history. Unfortunately, current educational policy in this country isn't helping the situation. As Americans, I believe it is vital that we understand the history of our nation. One of the stated goals of the Tea Party movement is "respect for the United States Constitution", something no one would disagree with. On the other hand, it helps if you are familiar with what it says:

As important as it is for Americans to study and understand the documents from the founding of our country, it's also vital that we are familiar with more recent history. Such as how the literacy test was used to deny suffrage to African Americans. It also might be a good idea to refresh one's memory regarding the National Voting Rights Act of 1965 before making comments like these:

I do have to wonder if Tea Party speaker, Tom Tancredo realizes that some of his intended audience might not pass the sort of literacy test he advocates:
