Saturday B.S. Roundup ~ November 16, 2013

I am still battling asthma so this is late and there are only two examples of b.s. this week. One of these days I'll be back at full throttle, though.

1. Muslim Prayer Curtain:

In yet another example of "OMG! This proves Obama's a Muslim!", this photo collage is making the rounds. According to accompanying text, President Obama had a "Muslim prayer curtain" installed in the White House so he could stand in front of it rather than American flags.

The thing is, those gold curtains (which do not have "Muslim symbols", by the way) have hung in the White House since the '60s.

2. Got Insurance?:

Many are infuriated by a series of ads directed at young adults in an effort to get them to sign up for "Obamacare". Now, I'm not going to defend the ads themselves. First of all, I haven't seen all of them, and second, the ones I've seen do have messages which are provocative - by design, I might add.

The thing is that many of those who are taking issue with the ads say that part of their outrage is that their tax dollars paid for these questionable ads.

According to FactCheck.org, however:
"...the ads are not taxpayer-funded.
As we mentioned earlier, the ads are the creation of two nonprofit groups, Colorado Consumer Health Initiative and ProgressNow Colorado Education, and Adam Fox, director of strategic engagement for CCHI, told us neither group received any state or federal money for the ad campaign.
So where did the money come from? Fox said the money came from “private foundations that we applied to for grants.”"
So, while it's certainly reasonable to not approve of the tone or message of the ads, it's important to note that no state or federal tax money paid for them. Also, these ads are entirely web-based, spread via social media, with "no plans to put the ads in magazines, newspapers, billboards or on the sides of buses."
