A few months after Hurricane Katrina, David and I ventured back into the city we love, unsure of what we would find. It was a mixed bag but there were some shining moments. One of those was the opportunity to see Charmaine Neville at Snug Harbor. This was the first time we'd seen her and we were utterly charmed.
We were there for the 8 p.m. show but since tourists were few and far between, Charmaine invited the audience to stay for the second show, too, which we did. While eating dinner before the show we had heard police sirens but hadn't paid much attention. We later learned that there had been a shooting out on the street where we had walked just a few minutes prior. Several clubs on Frenchmen Street closed down for the night and some of the musicians wandered into Snug Harbor where they joined Charmaine for an impromptu jam session during the second show. It was one of those experiences that cannot be recreated and we felt lucky to have been there.
Since then we've seen Charmaine's show at Snug Harbor another time or two, as well as a performance at French Quarter Fest a couple of years ago. She was then diagnosed with a very serious hereditary disease and I wasn't sure we'd ever get to see her perform again but I just read that she is doing better and will be performing at French Quarter Fest this weekend. I can't wait to see her again. She is not only a talented singer but she puts on an amazing show.
